Hi @samspud2
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here are a few possible causes and solutions:
1. Check for Charging Port or Cable Issues
- Inspect the charging port on the device for dirt, debris, or physical damage that could be causing an intermittent connection.
- Try a different charging cable and adapter. Sometimes the charging cable or charger might work inconsistently, especially when the device is on, drawing more power.
- Use a different outlet: Ensure the power outlet you're using is functional. Try plugging the charger into a different outlet or use a known working USB charging port.
2. Software or Power Management Issues
- Check for power management settings: Some devices have settings that limit charging while the device is on, particularly when running intensive tasks.
- Power-saving modes or battery optimization settings might restrict charging when the device is active.
- Try disabling power-saving settings to see if it helps when charging while the device is on.
- Reboot the device: If the device has software glitches or power management issues, rebooting it might clear the problem temporarily.
- Software update: Check for firmware or software updates for the device, as bugs related to charging may be addressed in newer versions.
3. Battery or Charging Circuit Issue
- Faulty battery or charging circuit: If the device is only charging when turned off, there might be an issue with the battery or the charging circuit inside the device.
- In some cases, the device needs to be powered off to bypass certain charging circuits that may be malfunctioning. This could be a hardware failure.
- If the device is under warranty, it might be a good idea to contact the manufacturer or the place of purchase for support or a replacement.
4. Overheating Issues
- Overheating: If the device is getting too hot when in use, it might stop charging to prevent damage to the internal components. Ensure that the device is not overheating by checking for excessive heat buildup when using it while charging.
- If it’s hot, unplug the charger, allow the device to cool down, and then attempt to charge again.
- Consider using the device in a cooler environment or remove any cases or covers that might block airflow.
5. Reset the Device (If Applicable)
- Factory Reset: If none of the above solutions work, performing a factory reset could resolve any software-related issues causing the charging problem. Make sure to back up your data before doing a reset.
- Check the device’s manual or settings for the procedure to perform a soft reset or factory reset.
6. Testing on Another Device (If Applicable)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
