HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation Desktop PC (4Y0H6AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Recently purchased an Z2 Gen9 desktop (not mini) with the i9-13900 processor. The performance is terrible compared to other benchmarks and real-life video editing and rendering. For example, Cinebench is giving a score of about 20,000, which is terrible for this processor (should be getting 32,000+). During the test, CPU temps stay in the 60 degree Celsius range, and the clock never goes above about 2,500 Mhz.

Tried to look into the BIOS to see if there was something limiting the processor, but it is pretty basic and doesn't seem that much can be changed.

Any suggestions?

Bumping this to the top in case anyone has any suggestions. Not getting the performance expected or as seen with other i9-13900 machines.

Any updates on this? I was thinking about the same machine for Cinema4D but your post scares me.

You tried to set to high performance in Windows energy settings or similar in BIOS?

EDIT: Due to your CPU keeps that cool during Cinebench it sounds like the CPU is maybe limited to its 65 W base power. Hopefully not. You should ask real HP support (not those on here!)

Running Cinebench with HWInfo running in the background, it does appear that the CPU is locked at 65 Watts. The BIOS doesn't seem to have any settings to bump that up or set anything to high performance.

I went back and really dug through the BIOS and found a setting that was set to "Performance Mode" and changed it "High Performance Mode". My Cinebench score went from 20,663 to 24,895.

At the beginning the the core clocks went to 5,586 MHz for maybe 10-20 seconds, core temps went quickly to 100 degrees C. Power draw during this short period was 215 watts. Then the core clocks settled down to 3,000 MHz and core and package temps ended up in the upper 70s. Power draw seems to have been capped at about 100 watts at this point, and the the Power Limit Exceeded was flagged on all 24 cores in HWInfo.

Still quite a bit below what the i9 13900 should be doing, but it seems they have limited the power draw significantly, probably mostly because of the limited CPU cooler provided stock.

Hope this helps someone else making a buying decision...
