Product: HP Z4 G4 Workstation

Planning to set up our Z4 G4 to boot from a pair of M.2 NvMe drives via the VROCSTANMOD dongle. I have done this before on other Z4 machines, works fine. I figure that a pair of 500GB Samsung 980 M.2 drives will be plenty for the OS - the data will be on other drives, not part of the boot array.
I see that the Samsung M.2 NvMe 980 PRO drives are quite a bit faster than the 980 drives. But the Z4 G4 specs state that the Xeon CPUs contain "three PCIe 3.0 controllers" - so does this mean than the faster PCIe 4.0 NvMe drives either will not work, or will only work according to whatever speed constraints the PCIe 3.0 controllers might impose?
