HP Z400 6 Dimm slots
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi All,

Can you assist me in the process of increasing/using current standard unbuffered Ram of 4 by 2GB each = currently 8GB in my work Z400  [XX382PA] Xeon W3505 2.53GHz Win 10 Pro workstation.

I have available two further HP 4GB sticks of the same unbuffered RAM.

I would prefer to use any/all of the 4x2 sticks WITH one, or two [preferred] of the 4GB sticks in the 6 Dimm slots available.

Can I do this?

If so, what is the most efficient placement of those 4x2 and 2x4 RAM sticks in order of the 6 slots?

Thank you for any advice.

Very interesting, the following document says it has 8 slots of RAM

Your machine could be from the following batches

You need to install RAM using the following table to get the best performance:

Thanks for the prompt response.

Unfortunately, this does not help with how using a mix of 4x2 and 2x4 RAM sticks can be applied into the available six slots.

I was hoping to use the 4x2GB RAM sticks in conjunction with either one OR two of the 2x4 RAM GBsticks.

First choice using 4x2 = 8 with 1x4=4 achieving 12GB in six slots.

Second choice as the first adding the other 1x4GB= 12+4=16GB

As I read your forwarded chart, cannot see how this will work.

Regards to you for your timely reply.

Well, your option may (a) not work at all or (b) work with worse outcome. The table shows you from Good, Better to Best. Now it is your choice. You can get (a) or (b) if you wish.

Thank you for the follow up.

I found interesting and useful both of your pdf links.

The eight slots appear to be relevent to the Z440, a nice workstation.

The chart configurations will be adhered to, I have strictly maintained my Z400's [3] to HP standards, although wondered if a mix mentioned could utilise RAM from one Z400 into another.

As this cannot be achieved, further RAM to meet the best configuration will be sourced for installation.

The documents and advice has been well reagarded.
