Z440 Post issue

Hello, I recently got a z440 motherboard for a server project I have been wanting to do for awhile, I tried dropping a e5 2696 v4 and 128 gb of ddr4 ecc udimms (8x16 dimms) and all I get is a blinking red light and fans spinning. I am thinking it needs a bios update but I cant seem to find one and I got a e5 2630L v3 for debugging if need be, other than that I was wondering if there where any proprietary features stopping the post sense I have an after market case but bought a stock cpu fan heatsink, jumped the pins for the ram shroud heatsink and got a psu adapter to power it. OK, the primary reason your HP Z440 Workstation is failing to POST is a memory incompatibility: the HP Z440 requires ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load-Reduced (LRDIMM) memory, but it does not support ECC Unbuffered (UDIMM) memory like the HP ProLiant ML30 Gen9 Server.

When you populate the slots with ECC UDIMMs, the motherboard will refuse to boot and will typically signal a pre-video memory error via the blinking red lights.

Here is a breakdown of the specific issues you are encountering and how to resolve them to get your server project running:

1. Memory Compatibility (The Core Issue):

• The Problem: Xeon E5-26xx v3/v4 processors and the HP Z440 platform explicitly utilize DDR4 ECC Registered (RDIMM) or LRDIMM modules. Standard unbuffered memory (whether ECC UDIMM or non-ECC desktop UDIMM) is completely unsupported by this server-grade chipset architecture.
• The Solution: Swap out your current 8x16GB UDIMMs for DDR4 ECC Registered RDIMMs (e.g., PC4-2133P for v3 CPUs or, preferably, PC4-2400T / PC4-2666V for v4 CPUs). RDIMMs are widely available, inexpensive on the secondary market, and will immediately resolve this error code.

2. Processor Support & BIOS Updates:

• Booting with the v4 CPU: The HP Z440 only supports Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors if the motherboard has a later boot block revision (typically manufactured late 2015 or later). Early Z440 motherboards are physically locked to Xeon v3 processors.
• Important: If your Z440 does not yet have the latest Linux-approved BIOS version (2.59 as found here), use the Xeon E5-2630L v3 to upgrade your Z440 first before installing the Xeon E5-2696 v4.  And yes, the E5-2696 v4 is definitely compatible with the Z440 platform as shown here.
• The Debugging Strategy: Do not attempt to debug with the v4 processor yet. Drop in your Xeon E5-2630L v3 along with compatible ECC RDIMM memory first. If the system POSTs with the v3 chip, you can access the BIOS to check your firmware version and see if the board recognizes the v4 microcode.

3. Proprietary Case & Header Diagnostics:

Since you are using an aftermarket chassis, a specific sequence of blinking red lights and beeps can pinpoint if a proprietary header sensor is halting the POST. Count the sequence of blinks:

• 5 Blinks / Beeps: This is the definitive code for a Memory Error. If you see this, it confirms the UDIMM incompatibility.
• 3 Blinks / Beeps: This indicates a Processor Error (which will happen if an un-updated or unsupported v4 CPU is installed).
• Other Front Panel Headers: Ensure your custom case wiring isn't shorting out the front panel header.
