Dear All,
I'm the happy owner of a Z440 workstation with an E5-2860 v4 CPU, 32Gb of DDR4 2133-R RAM in four DIMMs, an Nvidia RTX A4000, one Samsung 980 system drive on an HP Z turbo Drive Gen. 2 and two HP FX900 Pro's on the HP Z turbo drive Dual in Windows SoftRAID as a data drive. I use this system mostly for 3D modeling/rendering in Daz3D studio.
When I upgraded this box from its original E5-1630 v3 CPU 18 months ago, I didn't bother with upgrading the 4x8Gb 2133-R DDR4 DIMMs. They were still a tad pricey to my Ebay tastes. Now, with the prices of 2400T DDR4 DIMMs at very reasonable levels I'm wondering which of the following two options might be a better upgrade.
1. Replace the 4x8Gb 2133-R DIMMs with 4x16Gb 2400T DIMMs
or
2. Add another 4x8Gb 2133-R DIMMs to populate the remaining four DIMM slots of the Z440.
My research has led me to understand that at best I can expect a 10% performance increase by going to 2400T's, which is fair enough. That said, I've found it hard to discover if there is any memory bandwidth benefit in populating the remaining four DIMM slots.
I'm sort of leaning towards replacing the four 2133-R DIMMs, mainly because I wouldn't need to add the Memory Fan shroud which I assume will make my very quiet Z440 louder. (Though I've also found some bloke's video on YouTube where he shows a cute jumper trick to fool the Z440's BIOS in thinking the shroud is installed. Not sure I want to go down that route as apermanent solution though.)
At the same time, I'm wondering if I might see any any increase in potential memory bandwidth by going from 4 populated DIMM banks to 8 populated DIMM banks which might translate into faster asset load/save times. I just haven't been able to find any data on the matter.
That said, I realise that I'm not suddenly going to see huge improvements on a system of this vintage. Particularly as it's already pretty maxed-out with regards to CPU, GPU and NVMe disk I/O.
Any thoughts on this matter would be appreciated.
