Z620
Ubuntu LTS

I have a Z620 system currently configured with two Xeon E5-2690 processors, 192GB of memory, and a 512GB Z-Turbo drive. As this is a virtualization system I decided to pick up a pair of Xeon E5-2697v2 processors. Before doing so I reviewed the technical specifications for compatible, or at least processors that were sold by HP, with this system. It looked like it they should be a drop in replacement.

After installing the processors the screen remained blank and then the cooling fans began to spin up to the point they were audible. I assume this is because the system is not able to read the temperature and therefore goes into a failsafe mode where the fans spin up. From all appearances it doesn't look as if the system is doing anything. I left it on for about 15 minutes and nothing changed.

To troubleshoot I reinstalled one of the E5-2690s and the system booted as expected. Thinking maybe I received a bad E5-2697v2 processor I installed the secondary processor onto the system board and powered it up. Same result.

I am not sure if there's anything I can do to troubleshoot this further. It seems unlikely, though possible, both CPUs would be bad. I reviewed HPs support site and didn't find anything helpful. Before performing the upgrade I ensure I had the latest UEFI installed (J61 v03.96) and even investigated the Management Engine Firmware (7.1.91.3272).

Can anyone provide some light as to why the new processors are not working? I can exchange them for another pair but it seems unlikely that both are bad. I noticed the current processors are Sandybridge and the new ones are IvyBridge but, as far as I am aware, the two should be interchangeable (or I didn't find anything that suggested the newer processors couldn't work in a system with the older processors). Is there the possibility the system board does not support the IvyBridge processors?
