HP Z640 Base Model Workstation
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me some assistance.  I bought a z640 and really like the machine.  Paired it with a RTX3060ti and a E5-1650 v4  and could not be happier.  I use the system for HVAC Design, Graphics and Gaming.  I would like to upgrade the CPU.  Does anyone have any experience adding a  E5-2687W v4 or a E5-2689v4?

Thanks,

Brian

@RebelSon,

Welcome to our HP Community Forum!

I suggest that you take a close look at the "HP System Z640 Workstation" Users in this UserBenchMark link: UserBenchmark: HP Z640 Workstation Compatible Components.

Interestingly, it is the E5-1650 v4 which performs best in this platform: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/51937634.

As far as the E5-2687W v4 or a E5-2689v4 is concerned:

E5-2687W v4: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/58765010

E5-2689 v4: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/63134205

In addition, Users installed these high-end Xeon processors:

E5-2690 v4
E5-2697 v4
E5-2697A v4
E5-2699 v4
E5-2699A v4

Anyway, in my opinion -from a Gamer's point of view, I see no particular reason why you would want to change your CPU.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Thank you for the information.  I did decide to try a e5-2689v4.  The z640 would not boot.  Updated bios and still nothing.  I tried it in a few systems and it would only work on my Dell Power Edge.  I spent about a week on  it and in the end I returned it.   I actually did get get an E5-2697A v4.  The 2679A is absolutely incredible.  I can run my cad programs from one screen for work and play on another.  Thank you NonSequitur for the reply.  Your information is spot on.  Wish I would have read it before I made my purchase but thank you for the reply anyway.
