I have a Z800 workstation duel CPU with 96G RAM.  Installed ubuntu 20.04.  first hd is a SSD 128G.   I added another SanDisk SSD 2T and mounted as /ssd2.

Then I cp all files from /var to new disk

sudo cp -r -a /var /ssd2/var

(I cannot sudo mv /var /var2 ,  var was locked)

then I edit /etc/fstab.  add one line as

 /ssd2/var /var none defaults, bind 0 0

then I reboot the machine.  it shows message something like :

auto update blabla , donot power off....

After reboot, I find the /var does not have those files as in /ssd2/var.  and it is very slow.  looks like it did not mount /ssd2/var to /var.  So I comment out line I added to  fstat and reboot.  This time it is very slow to boot into bios menu, the keyboard is very slow,  takes mins to display message on screen.  cannot boot from hd.  even very slow to load a ubuntu dvd iso。

This seems like a hardware issue -- not something caused by installing/running UBUNTU.

When you power-on the computer, choose to run the HP Hardware Diagnostics, to see if your HDD(s) are failing.
