Hello All. I just updated a Z820 Workstation from Windows 7 64bit to Windows 10 64bit. After the upgrade, the DVD drive is no longer accessible. I followed the steps in this note https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03370738 but no luck. To summarize what I've done:
- checked the bios and the drive is visible as CD-ROM SATA0 hp DVD-RAM SW820
- in device manager there is no CD/DVD Drive. If I put a disk in the drive, the drive lights and spins but nothing happens. No CD/DVD device shows up in Windows File Manager
- I've shutdown, unplugged the box for 5 minutes and started back up but no difference
- I've shutdown the box, unplugged the drive itself both power and data cables, restarted, shutdown again, plugged the drive back in and still no change.
- Based on the above note, I've gone into the registry to a specific key and removed the UpperFilters attribute. The doc says to also remove LowerFilters but that didn't exist. Rebooted, still no change.
- in device manager there is Other Devices and under that, SCSI Controller with the yellow triangle. I've tried updating the driver for this but it can't find the correct one no matter what I try. This system is on an internal network with no access to the internet so I have to manually download drivers and copy them to the box to install them. I've tried an HP driver recovery disk for the Z840 series box (couldn't find the Z820 disk) , I've gone to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-z820-workstation/5225041 to get all the Windows 10 drivers for the Z820 and installed them all but no luck. I searched for the driver for hp dvd-ram sw820 and only found a page (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-dvd-rom-drive-series/3341110 ) from HP that says 'unable to find drivers for your product. There are other non-vendor pages out there that say they have a driver but I don't trust them.
Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated. I'm running out of things to try.
Thanks,
Mark

Finally solved this problem. Even though I updated all the drivers based on HPs Z820 Drivers and Software page, not all drivers were automatically updated by the installers. In my case, the DVD drive is connected to an on-motherboard SATA controller. We have 5 different controllers listed under StorageControllers in Device Manager. The Intel Chipset SATA RAID Controller driver was not automatically updated when I installed the Intel Chipset drivers update. I manually updated that SATA RAID controller and magically the CD/DVD device showed up in Device Manager. Not sure why updating a RAID controller fixed the DVD drive issue but there must be some common driver software because I wouldn't think the DVD drive is controlled by a RAID controller. In any event, problem solved
