how to add a 2nd hard drive to my HP590-p0070?

Adding a second hard drive to your HP Pavilion 590-p0070 (3LA18AA) as fitted with the Lincs motherboard (SSID: 843B)

is straightforward. Here's how:

1. Check available slots and connectors

   • Open the case (power off and unplug first).

   • The 590-p0070 has one 3.5” SATA bay for HDDs/SSDs and one M.2 slot for an M.2 NVMe SSD.

   • You'll also need a free SATA data port on the motherboard + a SATA data cable and a SATA power connector from the PSU.

   • There are three SATA data ports on your motherboard.  The white colored one is usually reserved for an ODD (Optical Drive) but can also be used for a SATA drive.

2. Install the drive

   • Mount the 3.5" HDD in an available bay or use a 2.5" SSD (preferable for speed and performance) with an adapter bracket if needed.

   • Connect the SATA data cable to the motherboard.

   • Connect the SATA power cable from the PSU.

3. Close the case and power on

4. Initialize the drive in Windows

   • Press Win + X → Disk Management.

   • You should see the new drive as “unallocated.”

   • Right-click → Initialize Disk, then create a new volume and format it (NTFS recommended).

Once done, the second drive will be available in This PC for storage.

I just ordered a 4TB WD HDD and SATA data & power connectors to be compatible with the existing 1TB WD HHD in the system.

I'm not a "Gamer" so speed was not a priority for me and the parts cost under $100.🙂

Thank you again NonSequitur777... the second drive is in. A little difficult removing the side mounting... the face for the DVD drive had to pop off but was easy to replace once everything was back together. Then mounting the new drive was a breeze. The existing drive was mounted vertically and the new drive had to mount horizontally. There was one spare exiting cable in the machine so I only had to add a new cable to the HDD2 port on the mother board. I cloned my existing 1TB drive onto the new 4TB drive... it only made a 1TB partition and left the rest blank. After re-configuring the partitions on the new drive I switched the two cables of HDD1 & HDD2 to make the new drive primary.
