HP Slimline Desktop - 290-p0056
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I use an HP Slimline Desktop 290-p0056, running on Windows 10. It came new with one 8GB memory stick installed. I am writing because there appear to be conflicting responses to prior questions on this board. I noticed recently that WindowsTask Manager shows that there are times when my Memory usage climbs to 90%+, and computer speed slows down accordingly. I would like to increase the memory to 32GB, if possible. Can I do that? If so, I think that the computer has a total of 2 memory slots, so should I remove the 8GB one and install two new 16 GB ones? Does HP sell them, and if so, what is the product number? Thanks for your help.

Its specs

           https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06001408

It has 8GB now

  • Amount: 8 GB
  • Speed: PC4-21300 MB/s
  • Type: DDR4-2666

HP gives us some unbelievable information

Memory upgrade information

  • Dual channel memory architecture
  • Two DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets
  • Supports up to PC4-21300 (DDR4 2666)
  • Supports 4 GB and 8 GB DDR4 UDIMMs
  • Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit systems
    note:
32-bit systems cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
  • Supports up to 8 GB (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers
    note:
Maximum memory shown reflects the capability of the hardware and can be limited further in the operating system.

It should accept 32GB (2 x 16GB) please use the following way to find out

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

Regards.

Thank you very much for that information. As you suggested, I just ran the Command prompt and it shows a "Max CapacityEx" of 33554432. That confirms your belief that 32GB is possible, but should I believe the Command info or the HP document you initially quoted, that says the maximum memory capacity is only 16GB? I don't want to blow out my computer by inserting too much RAM. Thanks again.
