hp prodesk 400 g1 mt
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have just upgraded a hp prodesk 400 g1 mt to an i7-4790 and the system now hangs during reboot. The system seems to shut down but then fails to restart. A hard shut down by holding the power button down is required.

The i7-4790 is a supported processor. Bios and drivers have all been updated to the latest version. A larger power supply has been tried to no effect.

Hopeful that there is someone else with this issue or a workaround.

Thanks

That is interesting. However, it is likely that it referred only to an HP version of the processor.

The Maintenence & Service does not list it amongst the compatible processors.

I do see the compatibility of an HP p\n  769738-001 in the HP PartSurfer list of compatible components. See the following link.

http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=J6D32UT

769738-001Intel Core i7-4790 Quad-Core processor - 3.6GHz (Haswell, 8MB Level-3 cache, 84 Watt Thermal Design Power (TDP), socket 1150/H3/LGA1150) - Includes thermal material

I can understand your disappointment in the fact that the  i7-4790 processor that you installed is not working. We have seen this incompatibility happen before. I recommend that you return it to the vendor you purchased it from.

That processor is not compatible with your PC's systemboard.

There is no BIOS support for that processor.

The Maintenence & Service guide for your PC lists the following compaitible processors.

Intel Core i7 4771 (3.5-GHz, 8-MB L3 cache), 84W 742563-001
Intel Core i7 4770 (3.4-GHz, 8-MB L3 cache), 84W 727373-001

, thank you for your attention and your replies. I traded the i7 for an i5 from another system. Hopefully these posts will keep someone else from making this mistake. Again, thanks for your time and attention.

I just attempted to update a ProDesk 400 G1 MT from an i3 to the i7-4790 and discovered the reboot problem.  Everything other than reboot/restart works.

I tried all possible combinations of hardware, booting from linux on a USB drive, and swapping the i3 and i7 in and out of the system.  I disconnected all possible hardware ... basically reduced to just the motherboard, RAM, CPU and USB flash drive off a rear USB port.  I was not able to create a compatible configuration.  I too had done everything I think the original poster did ... most current BIOS, reviewed all online materials, looked for any indication of incompatibility across the internet.

Jason, I feel your pain.  Hopefully, this thread will be found by others.  In addition, it might be helpful if HP considered reviewing its documentation if there are special requirements for 4790 compatibility.

One more detail/confirmation:  the ProDesk 400 G1 MT was sold configured with the i7-4790, one product number was K1L92UT#ABA.

Sxi, the situation is unfortunate 😞  HP updating the quick specs would solve this problem before we had it. 😞

Someone fix this:

There was only one core stepping release for the i7-4790: C0, SR1QF.  And, I can't image HP managed having its own version, so I'm at a loss for what is not compatible.

The i7-4790 CPU we tried in the ProDesk 400 G1 was put into another system and has operated without issue for more than a week.  Further confirming the issue noted in this thread of a general compatibility issue.
