Hello,

I have a Victus desktop PC plugged into a surge protector socket with a stop button, I noticed that when switching on using the socket button the PC fan ran for 1 second, is this normal?

Hi @Tom2854

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It’s not uncommon for a desktop PC to show some initial signs of power activity when switching on, but the behavior you're describing—where the PC fan runs for only about 1 second and then stops—may suggest a few things. Here's a breakdown of what might be happening and what you can check:

1. Initial Power Surge

  • When you press the surge protector’s stop button and then switch it back on, it could create a small initial surge or spike in power. The PC fan might briefly spin as the system receives a rush of power, but then stop if the PC doesn’t fully power up right away.
  • Is it normal?: A brief fan spin can be normal, but if the PC doesn’t continue to power on, there might be an issue.

2. Power Supply Issues

  • The power supply unit (PSU) could be having trouble supplying consistent power when the surge protector is turned back on, especially if the power is being interrupted abruptly.
  • Is it normal?: If the fan doesn't continue to run after the initial spin, it could suggest an issue with the PSU or its connection to the motherboard.

3. Surge Protector Interference

  • Some surge protectors have power buttons that control the flow of electricity to connected devices, and if they are faulty or not supplying a stable current, the PC might not be able to start properly.
  • Is it normal?: The surge protector itself may be playing a role here. Consider plugging the PC directly into the wall socket to see if it behaves differently.

4. Check the Power Button and Connections

  • Ensure that the power button on the front of your Victus desktop is properly connected to the motherboard.
  • Also, verify that all power cables (including the one to the surge protector and from the PSU to the motherboard) are secure.
  • Is it normal?: No, if the system doesn't fully power on after the fan spins momentarily, this suggests there might be a loose connection or hardware issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello and thank you for your answer, I plugged the PC directly into a wall socket and there is the same effect, the USB ports are powered and the fan is running, this just for a brief moment less than a second; after if I press the start button the PC starts normally without problem, if I turn off the PC later and leave it plugged into the socket at the next restart everything is normal, it is the fact of unplugging that produces this effect, I checked with a consumption meter the consumption of the PC when stopped and there is indeed current consumption around 12 watts, this means that the PC needs current permanently have a good day

Hello,
sorry but the problem is still the same if I cut the power to the PC by going through the switch of the surge protector socket which protects the PC from voltage differences and well I always have when switching on this short moment of switching on the USB and the fan which starts 1 second before even pressing the start button on the front of the PC,

cordially,
