Elitedesk 800 g2 TWR
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

does anyone know if the MB in the Elitedesk 800 G2 full tower is a standard ATX board? I'm getting about 10 of these computers out of Ewaste and my plan is to try putting decent GPUs, SSDs, and more ram into them to make them viable computers despite their age. Another question I have is; if the motherboard is in fact ATX, what other parts are standard format/ non proprietary? Any help would be appreciated.

@StiffCumSock69,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The EliteDesk 800 G2 TWR uses a proprietary HP motherboard and power supply -it is not a standard ATX board by any stretch of the imagination. Whilst the case may look like it could fit standard parts, the layout and connectors (especially the PSU and front panel) are proprietary.

That said, you can still upgrade within its design limits:

  • GPU: Mid-range GPUs can work, but you’ll be limited by the PSU’s wattage and proprietary connectors.

  • RAM: Supports DDR4 up to 64 GB (depending on CPU).

  • Storage: Standard 2.5"/3.5" HDD drives, SATA SSDs and M.2 NVMe SSDs -see below.

If your goal is to reuse them as viable PCs, adding SSDs and RAM is straightforward and gives a big performance boost. But for a full ATX board swap or modern PSU/GPU upgrade, these towers are not ideal because of the proprietary design as well as the age (ten years) of this system.

Btw, an HP EliteDesk 800 G2 TWR can boot from an M.2 NVMe SSD, but it requires a BIOS update and the use of a PCIe to M.2 NVMe SSD adapter card, as the motherboard does not have a native M.2 slot for NVMe drives. After the BIOS update, you can install a PCIe adapter into a free PCIe slot on the motherboard and place the NVMe SSD into the adapter to use it as the primary boot drive. You can find the latest BIOS update here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-elitedesk-800-g2-tower-pc/model/7633302, with BIOS version 02.60 Rev.A (released on Feb. 14th, 2023).

And speaking of proprietary power supplies, you could bypass this altogether by using a specialized ATX to HP 800 G2 power supply adapter, such as this Amazon-US purchase example: Amazon.com: YEZriler 24 Pin to 6 Pin ATX Power Adapter Sleeved Cable for HP Z200 Z230 4300 6080 8080....  This adapter would allow you to use an industry standard ATX power supply to power this PC and a graphics card.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,
