It would be good if you provide a specific Product Number.
We can check MB I/O.
I would guess your MB has, at least, two M.2 sockets. One socket would have the system drive, one socket is probably empty and ready for use.
You can do a PCIe to M.2 adapter at x4 if your MB has an open and available PCIe x4 slot.
Using an available PCIe x4 slot for storage may be limited by the MB chipset and how HP has assigned PCIe lanes.
You would cut the bandwidth in half to each M.2 drive if you want to do two M.2 drives on a PCIe/M.2 adapter if the MB PCIe x4 slot can provide four PCIe lanes.
