Hi

Happy holidays!

According to the motherboard layout and available expansion slots the MB does not have an M.2 socket which can be used for data storage.

It does have an M.2, key A socket but you need a Key M socket.

Hi

You do have one other option.

A 2.5 inch SATA SSD (such as a Samsung 850 EVO) will greatly improve disk performance.

It will not be as fast as an NVME PCIe 3x4 drive but you will see much faster read and write times compared to a standard HDD.

I have done this upgrade on many systems

Hi

The available M.2 socket on your motherboard will not support a PCIe 3x4 data drive such as a Samsung 960 EVO.

Hi

You can probably use a PCIe x16 adapter. Then install the M.2 NVME Samsung 960 in the adapter. I have not tried this on any HP PC's.

Some pitfalls to look out for are: (this is why I did not suggest this option)

1. Your MB (BIOS) does not support booting to an NVME drive. Verify the adapter has low level driver software to allow using the NVME drive as a bootable operating system drive. There would be no point in using a 960 as a data drive while having a slow HDD as the bootable OS drive.

2. This setup will kill using HP Recovery media (assuming this method is your current recovery strategy) to restore an HP factory image. The HP Recovery media will not see the drive.

You will have to rely on Windows Backup and Recovery options or use third party recovery software such as Macrium, Paragon, or EaseUS.

Any upgrade is possible. But you have to devise a plan to make recovering the system viable when add additional complexity.

You will also have to move your current OS to the 960 and will need to install the driver on the current OS installation so you can boot to the 960.
