I have bought a new HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-2000a (2Z6C8AV) and upgraded immediately to Windows 11.

My problem is that it keeps 'forgetting' the inbuilt CD/DVD drive. I have to go through the above procedure each time the computer is shut down or goes to sleep to rectify it. [I should qualify that I disconnect or uninstall each time then reconnect/install].

Hi AWSdC,

Please take a moment (or two) and check the comprehensive HP troubleshooting advice offered here: https://support.hp.com/my-en/document/ish_4238870-3271447-16

Even though this troubleshooting guide was written for W10, I see no reason to believe that it wouldn't apply equally to W11.

You may want to skip directly to "HP PCs - CD/DVD drive is not detected".

Before you start reading, the fix could be easy: go to Device Manager, and if the optical drive is listed, right-click the drive name, and then select "Uninstall", affirm, then again in Device Manager, click "Action", select "Scan for hardware changes", and then wait for Windows to find and install your drive.

If all goes well, your drive should display in Device Manager.

Good luck!

Kind Regards,

If you tried the device manager test as suggested by @NonSequitur777 and the CD disappears after the next reboot (or login) then you may have to upgrade your bios and/or drivers.

Some devices fail to wake up after the computer has gone to sleep due to bug in bios or driver.  There is a bios update for your system

https://support.hp.com/ie-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-desktop-pc-tp01-2000a/2100367768/model/...

that might fix the problem. It is dated Sep 19, 2021 so it seems to be for win11 as Microsoft released win11 in June for developers.  If the bios update does not fix the problem then try the chipset driver.  If neither work and the CD fails to wake up then post back here.

I have tried all of those suggestions and it still has no permanent affect. Although it does rectify the problem in the short term the computer forgets it if you shut down or go to sleep.

Going through the HP troubleshooting guide I feel I have done it all bar the BIOS bit as my BOIS screen does not have the 'storage' section it mentions. I will try again though as i am not use to doing this and may have missed something.

Your help is very much appreciated

I have replied to @NonSequitur777 and it has not been successful.

When I have temporarilly got the drive back I ran the driver update check and it says everything is up to date.

Thanks for your help

The bios update normally fixes the sleep problem but ---

If (and only if) the CD can be "re-discovered" by bringing up the Device Manager and doing a "Scan for new hardware" as suggested by @NonSequitur777  then there is a tool you can use to make this happen automatically after every login.

We will first try the tool to be sure it works

The application is named "devcon64.exe"  and it is used to re-scan devices which hopefully will wakeup your sleeping DVD

It is run from an elevated permission as shown here

BeemerBiker_1-1642349549374.png

The application is included free with many Microsoft SDKs but it is easier to get it (also free) from a 3rd party like Splashtop.  If you download and install splashtop and then look in their utility folder in "Program Files (x86)" you should find and copy the app(s) into your Download folder.  Alternately you can get both 32 and 64 bit apps from  me here

https://stateson.net/devcon.zip

The next time the DVD disappears run the application as shown above.  If it wakes up the DVD then come back here and I can walk you through having the application run automatically whenever you log in.

Many thanks for the suggestions and tips, it is much appreciated.

The problem does not happen now so an update must have sorted it.
