@cooljoe1515,

Btw, for your consideration: the best performing Xeon processor for an HP Z420 would be a Xeon E5-2687W v2 (average bench score: 78.5%) vs. Xeon E5-2697 v2 (average bench score 68.8%).

You can purchase a Xeon E5-2687W v2 for just $35 via an eBay Seller: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=E5-2687W+v2&_sacat=0&LH_BIN=1&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=1.

@cooljoe1515,

In most cases, HP only tests a limited number of processors.  This is no different with the HP Z420 Workstation and they decided to go with their processor "short list".  Actual HP Z420 Users have shown that that there are many more compatible processors to choose from, the Xeon E5-2697 v2 amongst them.

Whereas a Xeon E5-2687W has a 150-watt TDP, a Xeon E5-2697 v2 has a 130-watt TDP, resulting in a less-hot running processor, which is a good thing.

You are good to go if you so choose.

Kind Regards,
