HP Update Software Utility fails to dowload.  It comes back a few days later, and fails again.  I captured an image of the screen I get, but don't see how to upload so you could see.  I have no idea waht to do next.

Hi UncleDewey,

You're very welcome.

You are right. There are only two 2018 updates available at HP's Driver download site.

One of the updates is a newer version of HP's Support Assistant. The other HP update is HP Connection Optimizer.

Download and install the 2018 updates if you want the updates. You don't need either update. It's you choice.

A 2016 BIOS update (80.23 Rev.A) is also available. It is not necessary to install this update. BIOS updates should be installed if the HP documented BIOS fixes are relevant to a problem you are experiencing or the update corrects a known security issue. This 2016 BIOS update does not correct late 2017 early 2018 Intel processor flaws known as Meltdown and Spectre. Nor does it update to the latest version of Intel MEI firmware.

Your Product was released for sale in 2014. HP is not going to continually release drivers/security fixes for your PC at this point in the PC's life cycle. Running HP Support Assistant when HP is not issuing driver updates for your four plus year old PC is using valuable CPU cycles and memory. These resources could be used elsewhere.

I would not do any of the updates. The BIOS update should be manually installed if you decide to do this update. A bad/failed BIOS update can break your PC.

Regards

When upgrades are performed they can be done with the upgrade assistant or with a Windows 10 iso. Using a Windows 10 iso will create another error code which is the extend code. This information can help narrow down the underlying problem.

Run through this upgrade check list.

UPGRADE CHECK LIST:
Run through this check list before the next upgrade attempt:

1) remove nonessential hardware
docks
USB devices
printers
headset
speakers
bluetoot devices
USB drives (other than a windows 10 iso if used for the upgrade)
USB Wireless Mouse or Keyboard Receiver, USB Wireless Network Card,

2) These should be the only attached devices:
wired mouse
wired keyboard
monitor

Any of these that have been done in the past week are not necessary to repeat:

3) open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste: (repair file system)
chkdsk /x /f /r
This may take many hours so plan to run overnight
Find the chkdsk report in the event viewer using the information in this link and post into the thread:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials

4) open administrative command prompt and copy and paste: (repair operating system)
sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

5) update windows (have all recommended updates installed) and reboot after updates

6) uninstall all non-Microsoft antivirus software
(This includes always on and manual software.)

7) Verify that the drive has > 27 GB free space (At least 25 GB is needed for creating dumps)

😎 Place the computer in clean boot:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows
How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wik...

9) Remove all unused SATA devices

10) Uninstall non-Microsoft disk encryption software

11) Run disk cleanup to clean temporary and system files

Then perform a Windows upgrade with a Windows 10 iso.
Download Windows 10
During upgrade do not perform Windows updates.
If the upgrade is successful then perform Windows updates.
The type of upgrade is an in place upgrade repair:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Tutorials

To perform an in place upgrade repair with a windows 10 iso:
1) power on the computer and open file explorer
2) insert the bootable windows 10 iso into any USB port
3) identify the iso in file explorer and click on it to launch setup or setup.exe
4) follow the rest of the steps in this link:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Tutorials

If the in place upgrade works while in clean boot you will be set.
If the upgrade fails please post the error message and error code

I am using Windows 7.  I will run the Chkdsk tonight if I remember.

I have done the chkdsk, and scf tasks.  I now have to wait until the update comes back to see if it works or not.  It seems "clean boot" would not be helpful as I cannot stay in clean boot mode waithing for another update to occur--or am I missing something.

I just used HP Support Assistance program, and it said no updates available.

Ms rolls out major OS updates in stages, and decides which systems get updates based on reported feedbach of good and failed installs if you simply wait it will be offered again to you or you can manually start the setup. personally i would wait as there are reports on data loss from people who have done the update

in safe boot mode, you can force a update to the new os, but based on your replies i suspect you do not have the nessary experence with the Os and therefor should not do so

I was offered a new HP update, and it failed as before.  I'm not sure if the comments on Windows (OS) updates is applicable in my case.  Also I was offered a way to report the error to HP, but my experience in doing so is a waste of my time as I've never had a reply, but did so anyway.

I'm not used to being chided for not providing information, but.....  If I knew how I would provide an image of the error report which is not more info than you received in my first message:  The "HP Update Software Utility...Download Failed".  If you have any ideas on how to provide you more info I certainly will.

Have a better day,  Uncle Dewey

windows keeps a list of failed and installed updates,

Use the Windows Update history information to identify the error:
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & security.
  3. Click on Windows Update.
  4. Click the Advanced options link.
  5. Click the View your update history link.
  6. Click the link for the update that failed to install and note the error code.
