I tried one card and it never gets pass initial screen

The computer was released in 2011.  The newer video cards require UEFI in the motherboard instead of a standard/Legacy BIOS: https://www.howtogeek.com/56958/HTG-EXPLAINS-HOW-UEFI-WILL-REPLACE-THE-BIOS/

 

HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012.  The last series of cards that didn't require UEFI were the GTX 660/670's.  Depending on the card, you may have to upgrade the power supply unit (PSU), also.  The current PSU is only 300W.  If it is the same PSU that came with the computer, it will most likely have to be replaced soon because of age.
