Product: pavilion 510
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have pavilion 510, can I upgrade WD VelociRaptor 500 GB Workstation Hard Drive: 3.5 Inch, 10000 RPM, SATA III, 64 MB Cache - WD5000HHTZ as my main hard drive.

@nin69,

The specs state a 1TB drive.  Cloning can be done to a smaller drive, but you'll need to shrink the partition. See these programs.  If you get an equal sized drive, then a straight forward clone is possible.

What is the exact model # of this 510 series?

An equal sized hard drive can be cloned.  WD does furnish a free cloning program.

After some quick thoughts, I would like to add this comment.

 

The WD 500 is $145, the 1T is $398.  The ST1000DM003 is $55.

Scenerio:

1) Keep the original hard drive intact.  The HP Tattoo knows what size hard drive was installed.

2) Clone into the ST1000DM003, and verify it's booting.  Then the choice can be made which 1T drive you want to keep as a protected drive, away from the system.  That way, if you ever have a WD failure, you have a fall back into the OS.
