HP Z230 Base Model Tower Workstation

I want to upgrade my HP z230 tower workstations hardware.

Is there a document that shows my motherboards RAM and Gpu capacity?

If not, could you please tell me?

@Matliekpunner,

Welcome to our HP Community Forum!

Your HP Z230 Tower Workstation can be fitted with up to 4 x 8GB of DDR3 PC3-12800, 1600 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, DIMM (UDIMM), 240-pin RAM sticks.

Processor compatibility: Intel Xeon processor E3-1200 v3 family, such as the Xeon E3-1280 v3, and Intel's 4th gen core processor family, all the way up to an i7-4790K.

According to: HP Z230 Tower Workstation Specifications | HP® Customer Support, your PC is fitted with a high quality 400-watt power supply (p/n: 705045-001*) equipped with one 6-pin PCIe power cable, which can power graphics cards powered with one 6-pin PCIe power cable such as an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB, this is a nice graphics card, which, by the way, provides up to 34% better graphics performance compared with a GTX 1650: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1650-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-6GB/4039vs3639.  But I digress.

Alternatively: use a 6 to 8-pin PCIe power cable adapter for a lowish TDP card such as an RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Ti and you should be just fine.

* Please verify.

Hope this was helpful.

Hello my friend, first of all thank you. I think this product is suitable for graphics card?

@Matliekpunner,

Be advised that a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 6GB requires one 8-pin PCIe power cable and semi-officially a 450-watt PSU, but like I mentioned in my previous comment and looking at this card's TDP (160-watt), in my opinion you'll have a high probability of success by using an 8-pin to 6-pin PCIe power adapter cable* with your quality HP 400-watt* PSU to make this graphics card work for you.

[Disclaimer:] * Not ideal and something HP would not recommend.

It is stated in the intel documents for ram that there is dual ram support. Are you sure I can install 4x8gb 1600mhz ram?

@Matliekpunner,

Well, according to Intel's specs: Intel® Xeon® Processor E3-1231 v3 and last but not least Crucial: HP - Compaq HP Z230 Tower | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com, this processor is supposed to be able to handle 32GB of total ("Max Memory Size") RAM at 1600 MHz.

However, I went back to UserBenchmark: HP Z230 Tower Workstation Compatible Components, and found out, rather surprisingly, that no single HP Z230 Tower fitted with a Xeon E3-1231 v3 was fitted with more than 4 x 4GB (or 2 x 8GB) of 1600 MHz RAM.

So, based on this empirical observation, you may be right that this particular processor does not allow 4 x 8GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM for reason(s) unknown to me.

Rigs fitted with many other Xeon processors, such as the Intel Xeon E3-1225 v3, evidently have no problems whatsoever with being fitted with 4 x 8GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, such as this User shows: HP Z230 Tower Workstation Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Final thought: could be that for some inexplicable reason no Xeon E3-1231 v3 User ever tried 4 x 8GB RAM, so if it is not too much of a hassle for you to order 4 x 8GB RAM, and if it doesn't work, to return 2 x 8GB back to Seller?

Kind Regards,
