OMEN by HP Desktop PC 500-157c Product Page

http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/OMEN-by-HP-Desktop-PC/12079703/model/12740644/manuals

The hard drives "slide" into the hard drive bays.

HP uses a special "Cheese / Fillister Head" 6-32 machine screw with

a Torx T-15/Slot head as the "guide screw" for the HDD bays.

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05185432

HP does not sell these specific Cheese / Fillister Head screws to end-users (HP mgt. decision).

Compaq computers original used this type of screw for a decade (1990s), before the HP merger.

This question is asked in this HP Support Forum (Hardware) at least once each week.

I purchase these 6x32 screws for HP cases, on eBay, from the numerous surplus and parts houses.

Here is one reseller: http://www.ebay.com/usr/entermediaplus?_trksid=p2385738.m2547.l7859

NOTE: The Optical Drive, ODD, DVD/CD screws are NOT the same.

Those are METRIC, M3 and harder to source -- but do appear on eBay.

IF you are installing a 2.5 SSD, then the part number ( 654540-002 ) provided by the "MrRobot" is useful as an adapter carrier for the 3.5" hard drive bays.

WATCH Pricing, and note delivery times (China is normally 2+ weeks).

@btrbcomposer and @beatgr,

The specific screws are called "Fillister Head". I have mentioned this several times.

For the HDD mounting HP uses the machine screw, 6-32, 1/4" (0.25 inch) length, zinc plated steel.  DO NOT use longer length screws, which can damage the PC control boards of many hard drives.

There are SOME HP cases (Slimline s5000) that use a shorter version (3/16") for specific areas, this is noted in their user guides.

Dean's link provided to Grainger is for a Nylon screw, which I do not recommend

The specific head on the HP OEM screw is neither Cheese or Fillister (by standard definition of machine screws), Zinc plated steel is best.  HP OEM screws (6-32, 1/4") pictured below.

@beatgr,

Thanks for the update on metal Fillisters.  When I went to Fastenal (to sepc the screws form a HP 860), the price was $5 for only 4 screws.  That was years ago.  The nylon screws would work.

BTW, Grainger has them in 3/16 length (but it's still nylon). 500 less than $5.

Dean,

It is frustrating .... when the HP/Compaq Torx/Slot 6-32 screw is a combination of both machine screw standards.  FLAT head, (like Cheese), and a Larger Height to Diameter ratio (like Fillister).

Cheese has a Flat head -- BUT the head's height is normally "half the head diameter".

Fillister has a Convex (domed) head -- BUT its Height to diameter ratio is "larger than cheese head".

McMaster-Carr HQ (and their Chicago "Will Call" door) is about one mile from my house.

Rounded head screws

Torx head screws

https://www.mcmaster.com/#torx-machine-screws/=16kgoaj

They looked at it, a few years ago, ... and determined it was built "per a Compaq spec",

at least 25+ years ago.

This looks like the most likely answer,, from what I can see of the other drives without pulling them out.  HP store says that they are not YET available for sale, which I hope implies that they will be eventually.

Thanks all for the help.
