Hi
Calling all tech experts
Just brought a Brand new HP Pavilon Desktop 690 from HP Direct(The one with the green light at front)
Its got a i5 8400 processor and gtx 1060 6 gig graphics card
First thing is it did not come with keyboard or mouse. Is that normal?
Also its got an annoying noise like its constantly reading/write/ like a defrag chattering noise but not a high pitch noise
The hdd is the standard toshiba 1TB that came with the computer
The pc seem to run fine apart from the hdd noise
Any replies welcomed
Regards

Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂
I see that you're experiencing noisy operation on your new HP Desktop 690,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03754824
- (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).
- Does noise increase while opening videos, games or other application or does it happen only while accessing a specific application?
Once I have the product number, I would be able to identify what was shipped with your computer.
In the meanwhile, let's try these steps:
To reduce the noisy operation, let's try updating the BIOS: Click here
Using Windows Task Manager to identify corrupt processes
Consistent CPU load can cause heat buildup in the computer, forcing the fan to run continuously to keep the computer at operating temperatures. This heat buildup might be caused by corrupt software or malware. A corrupt process can consume CPU time anywhere between 1% and 100% of the CPU. Even a low but constant 3% to 4% load can cause the fan to run at a raised level.
Use the following steps to identify corrupt processes that might be consuming CPU time.
The screens vary slightly depending on your version of Windows. You will still see a Processes tab and CPU column.
-
Close all open Programs and save your work.
-
Press Ctrl, Alt, Delete, and then click Start Task Manager or Task Manager, depending on your version of Windows, to open Windows Task Manager.
-
Select the Processes tab, and then to sort the processes by CPU load, click the CPU column header.
-
Look through the list for suspect processes.
-
To find more information about a process, search the Internet using the process name that displays in the Windows Task Manager. Look for information that mentions the issue through other reports and suggests steps for resolving the issue.
Selecting power save settings to shut off your computer when it is not in use
Most operating systems allow you to change power settings. Use these settings to turn off the display when you are not actively using your computer. If you frequently leave your computer on when you leave it, then changing the power setting to turn off your monitor when it is not being used can help keep your computer running at a cooler temperature.
Keep me posted for further assistance,
If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,
Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum. Have a great day!

It looks like you were interacting with @Echo_Lake, but he is out for the day. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.
I suggest you run the extensive system test and this will confirm all the hardware functionalities
This test might take up to 2 - 4 hrs depending on the Hardware configuration.
- Shut down the Computer completely
- Turn it back on, then tap the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup menu screen is displayed.
- Press F2 to select System Diagnostics.
- Click System Tests, then click Extensive Test.
Keep us posted
Thank you 😊
