@diedie,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

As you already mentioned and as per your motherboard's specs: HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Milton | HP® Customer Support, the max RAM speed is 2666 MHz and can handle up to 2 x 16GB (32GB) max RAM:

In my experience, it is difficult to predict how any HP computer responds not just what happens when you install higher speed RAM sticks, but it also depends on what brand/model of RAM you happen to install.  Ideally, your 2 x 8GB 3200 MHz RAM sticks should default to 2666 MHz and run in dual-channel mode.

Or, for reasons not well understood, it may default to a lower RAM speed, such as 2400 MHz.  If you have the 3200 MHz RAM already, install it and see what happens. Use Speccy, for example, to check (picture below illustrates RAM performance on my HP EliteDesk G3 800 SFF, where 4 x 8GB 2400 MHz Samsung RAM is running at 2400 MHz and in dual-channel mode):

[EDIT:] You can download the very useful freeware Speccy utility program from here: Speccy - Free Download (ccleaner.com).

You are not going to benefit from fitting higher speed RAM sticks.  You may want to consider to 'stick' with 2666 MHz RAM such as referenced here: Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | hp - compaq | hp m01 series | HP M01-F0056nl | Crucial.com.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
