@buzzsaw2 --  All I  have to do is figure out how to copy and burn

I use Ashampoo Burning Studio Free - Free CD & DVD Burning Software

Just a few "clicks" to copy CD/DVD/BluRay media, even when you have only ONE device.

Of course, read the copyright on any disk, before you make a copy.

@buzzsaw2 -- if you purchase & connect an external CD/DVD device, via USB, does that hardware recognize "blank" media?

Or, find a local owner/operator computer store, and see if they have a "pre-owned" device, for $10 to $20, that will replace your device.  My guess is that they will have a stack of them, cannibalized from "dead" computers taken as "trade-in" by their customers.

i have not done either suggestion.i am currently waiting for a replacement from the company i purchased the pc from recently.

the drive is erratic because i got it to recognize a cd i made once and a 3" disc once, but when i just tried them again, they were not reconized. commercial made dvd"s (movies) have not been reconized as well as blank discs.

When you insert some media, and close the tray, do you hear the CD/DVD drive spin (and make noise like a buzz-saw, only quieter)?  If not, the motor that spins the media has failed.

If you insert some media, manually rotating the media until the text on the media is "face-up", and then close the tray, wait 30 seconds, and then open the tray, is the text on the media still in the same orientation? If it is, then the motor has not "spun" the media.

After inserting the media, does the lamp on the exterior front panel of the CD/DVD "flash" at all, to indicate that the laser inside the device is emitting light, and receiving the reflection from the surface of the media?  If not, then the laser could have burnt out.

Replace the device.  It might be easier/cheaper to purchase an external CD/DVD device, with a USB cable.
