I was trying to correct a Micro code error that came up after I installed the Pentium D 945 cpu..
I was not sure how to resolve the error..

The error message reads as follows:

1881 Microcode Update Error
Missing or Invalid Processor Microcode Update.
Please contact Hewlett-Packard Company for a new Microcode Update to support the new Processor stepping.

So that is what I"m trying to do.

Sorry forgot to ask,, not sure what you mean when you say updating does not require Booting from a flash drive?
Then have what in the USB port?
I am wondering why when I do install the USB/Flash drive in a USB port when I boot or try to boot up the computer it doesn't go to a DOS menu and let me Run the Flash file?

Unfortunately, I don't know why the first method I posted doesn't bring you to a DOS prompt.

I have given this microcode update method to several HP forum members that have dc7600 or dc7700 PC's.

The only difference is the actual microcode update file, which is different for the dc7600 and the dc7700.

The second method I posted is how to update the BIOS.   Just use the BIOS files I attached today.

Hi:

I found another utility you can use to make a USB flash drive bootable and it even loads the DOS files you need so you get to a command prompt.

So all you will need to do is to copy the microcode files to the flash drive after Rufus is done formatting it.

Download rufus portable from the link below.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Set the menu to format the flash drive as shown in my screenshot...

You don't need to put a volume label or you can just let rufus put a default label.

Then click on the start button.  Rufus will format the disk and add the DOS files.

See my second screen shot for the completed task.

Close out of the program and copy the Microcode files I attached from my first reply to the flash drive that Rufus formatted.

Copy just the files inside the folder.  Not the folder itself.

Put them in the Locale folder.

See my screenshots...first one is just when you explore the flash drive after Rufus formatted it.

The next screenshot shows the Microcode update files I copied into the Locale folder.

When you copy them, they will all be in one place.  My screenshot is after I closed the file and the files auto arranged, but I highlighted the files so you can see which ones they are.

Boot from the Flash drive and now you should be at a command prompt.

At that prompt, type Flashbin.exe and press the enter key.

Then follow the on screen instructions to update the Microcode to version 1.11.

This was much easier to do.

I am going to use this method from now on.

I just tested it out with the Microcode files copied to the Locale folder.

I don't have a dc7600 anymore, but I booted the flash drive on my 8200 Elite CMT, ran the Flashbin.exe command from the command prompt and it checked to find compatible hardware, and reported none found.

If I had a dc7600, it would have worked.

Easy as pie.

Hi Paul,, Thank you for continuing and sending further info,, The RUFUS-3.14 exe file/program wouldn't happen to be a Windows 10 file would it?

It won't run on either of my computers?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

According to the system requirements it is supported on the following OS'...

System Requirements:

Windows 7 or later, 32 or 64 bit doesn't matter. Once downloaded, the application is ready to use.

Try the non-portable version...first download link in larger type.

That will install on your PC rather than opening each time you run the portable file.

Hi Paul sorry for the delay in my reply,, Had to go to the Hospital with a Torn front ligament over my right Knee!,, OUCHY That truly Hoitz!

I was able to Format my USB drive with  Rufus-3.14 and try to flash the bios with Flash.Bin..

So there was an Error message that came up after a few moments that reads:

ERROR ! Either there are no Valid drivers on the Diskette(What ever that means? What Diskette? ) or, there are no up gradable devices  in this System!

Any Idea what that means? I've tried to find what the error message is indicating but there are no threads or information out there that I can find regarding that particular error message.

This computer was given to me why one of the organisations that donate computers to people who have disabilities and I"m wondering if they were able to block or remove something in the bios that would stop an attempt to upgrade the bios in some way...,,,for some strange reason?

Have to say,, between the 2 pages of information that you have provided and your wonderful help which I appreciate to the bottom of my heart, I have learned a amazing amount,, I have never used programs lie the one's you've told me about and trying to do a Bios update or upgrade is something that I have always wanted to try... I' m truly great full to you.

Hi:

Sorry to read about your accident.  I sure hope you recover quick!

Sounds like you got the same error I got, so it appears you did the steps right.

But I expected some kind of error since I did not run it on a dc7600.

Did you use the right file I attached (sp33313) on my first reply?

You don't use the BIOS update files I attached on one of my later replies.

sp33313 is the microcode update.  That is what should have worked with the bootable USB drive.

I am very glad to be of assistance, and I hope we can get this project completed successfully.
