I have an hp 251-a123w and would like to install a new MB, what hardware can be used to do a self upgrade of the hardware?

From your description, you want to build a DIY system.

 

The case that your PC has is proprietary, so anything not delivered within the same model series is not going to fit precisely.

 

I am reading the specs of your PC. They are pretty much at the entry level.

I will  advise you to either buy a replacement that has the specifications that you desire, start a DIY build or upgrade with a refurbished system that has higher specifications.

 

If you look at Tech outlets like NewEgg.com you can a system with double or triple the power and installed memory and better graphics at a fraction of the price that trying to upgrade will allow you to achieve.
