Hi @raviggn,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP laptop's built-in keyboard is having an issue with incorrect character input, despite an external keyboard working fine.
Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:
1. Check for Sticky or Malfunctioning Keys
- Inspect the keyboard: Make sure no keys are stuck or physically damaged. Clean the keyboard gently with compressed air to remove any debris or dust that might be affecting key presses.
2. Check Keyboard Settings
- Check Filter Keys and Toggle Keys: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Make sure Filter Keys and Toggle Keys are turned off, as these settings can alter how the keyboard responds to input.
3. Reinstall Keyboard Drivers
- Device Manager:
- Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboards section.
- Right-click on your keyboard device (likely listed as “Standard PS/2 Keyboard”) and choose Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop, and Windows will automatically reinstall the keyboard driver.
4. Perform a BIOS Reset
- Reset BIOS Settings:
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F10, F2, Del, or Esc during startup, depending on your model).
- Find the option to reset to default settings. This is often under an "Exit" menu or labeled as "Load Setup Defaults".
- Save and exit.
5. Update BIOS and Firmware
- Update BIOS:
- Visit the HP Support website and check for any BIOS updates available for your laptop model. Follow the instructions to download and install any updates.
6. Run Keyboard Troubleshooter
- Windows Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Keyboard Troubleshooter to detect and fix any issues automatically.
7. Test in Safe Mode
- Safe Mode:
- Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists. If the keyboard works correctly in Safe Mode, a third-party software or driver may be causing the problem.
8. Check for Hardware Issues
- Hardware Diagnostics: Use HP’s built-in hardware diagnostic tools to check for any hardware failures. You can access these tools by pressing F2 during startup or using the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics app. HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures
