Hi I have just bought a hp omnidesk m03 0017ns

When I opened it to put in 2 SSD drives I didn't recognise the cables from the PSU . They are 6 pin along with a 2 pin . On the board there are 2 slots which say sata 0 and Sata 1 and next to it a 4 pin slot which says sata pwr 1 and Sata per 2. How would I connect a bit al SSD Drive which has a 7 pin and 15 pin connectors.

Hi @Jimzara,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

As I understand from the pictures shared .

SATA Data: The small 7-pin connectors on your SSD plug directly into the SATA 0 / SATA 1 ports on the motherboard. This is standard.

SATA Power: Unlike standard desktop PSUs that provide a 15-pin power connector, HP often uses a proprietary 4-pin SATA_PWR header on the motherboard. The 6-pin + 2-pin cables from the PSU are meant to plug into the motherboard first, not the drives. The motherboard then distributes power to the SATA drives.

If  SATA power harness  is not there, you’ll need to order the correct HP SATA power adapter for your Omni Desk M03

Once you have the correct harness, installation is straightforward:

  1. Connect the 7-pin data cable from motherboard → SSD.
  2. Connect the 15-pin SATA power from the HP harness → SSD.
  3. Power on your BIOS should be able to detect the drives automatically.

I hope this helps

Hi , thanks for your reply .

The problem isn't that sata connection to the motherboard but the power connector.

I have researched it on the net and found that I need a L68308-001 cable which , quite incredibly, is unavailable on the HP website .

Why do they make non standard fittings ?

Now I have to look through eBay and amazon to find a 4 pin power cable that is exactly like the fitting on the board ?

Does HP believe that nobody wants to add a drive to their desktop computers ?

Could I use the white 4 pin pwr spot instead which I think is for a floppy drive ? Would it have enough power?

Wake up HP ! You look like amateurs.

Thanks again

Hi @Jimzara,

Thanks for your response.

HP uses custom power cables to match the internal layout and power distribution of specific desktop models, it’s more that the system was originally designed with a very specific internal configuration. I agree it can feel very limiting for you .

I hope this helps

Hi,

I believe it's a grave error on their part , as everyone wants to either use an old disk or expand . They have 2 spots for regular  information cables for an SSD drive . Why didn't they make a regular power connections for those drives ? Or at least made the cable available! Or at a bare minimum tell people that they will not be able to add further drives .

It's very frustrating to find this out after buying it . It's hardly a rare addition to a computer

Many thanks for your help, though

It won't let me access private messages.  Can you send me a link where I can buy the required power cable ( apparently L68308-001) for the for the motherboard 8D34 HP model omnidesk m03 0017ns. It is not available at the official HP parts site. I am in Europe ..

 Thanks
