Well, that sucks.
Let's see if we can assist you!
If the system is reporting the serial number of your HP ProBook 455 G4 as invalid during registration, here are some potential reasons and steps to resolve the issue:
Common Reasons for Serial Number Issues
Typing Errors:
- Ensure there are no mistakes in entering the serial number. Serial numbers are case-sensitive and often contain both letters and numbers. Double-check for characters that look similar, such as "0" (zero) and "O" (letter O).
Incorrect Region or Product:
- The serial number might not be recognized if the device was purchased in a different region or country. The US region code's serial number following your desktop's model, has "#ABA" added to a 7-digit alphanumerical code.
- Ensure you are registering the product under the correct category (e.g., notebook/laptop).
Device Already Registered:
- If the device was previously registered by someone else, it may show as invalid. This can happen if the device was bought second-hand.
Outdated or Unsupported Product:
- Older HP devices or those no longer under warranty might not be recognized by the online system.
System Glitch:
- Occasionally, HP's registration system might have technical issues causing valid serial numbers to be rejected.
Steps to Resolve
Recheck the Serial Number:
- Look for the serial number on the device:
- Label on the Bottom or Back: It's often printed on a label near the barcode.
- System Information: Type: msinfo32 in your Windows search bar to view the serial number.
- BIOS/UEFI: Access the BIOS by pressing Esc or F10 during startup to view the serial number.
- Look for the serial number on the device:
Register Manually via Customer Support:
- If the online registration fails, contact HP Support directly. Provide proof of purchase and the device details to complete the registration.
- HP Support Website: HP Support
Check Warranty Status:
- Use HP’s Warranty Check Tool to verify the device’s warranty status. This will confirm if the serial number is valid in HP’s database.
- Visit: HP Warranty Check
Try a Different HP Account:
- Log in to a different HP account or create a new one and attempt to register the device again.
Verify Product Information:
- Ensure you are entering the correct model and serial number combination. Sometimes confusion can arise if similar products have slightly different model identifiers.
Update Product Information:
- If the product information was incorrectly entered during a prior registration, HP Support can assist in updating their records.
Next Steps
- If all else fails, escalate the issue with HP Customer Support:
- Prepare to share the serial number, product number, and proof of purchase.
- Request manual registration or clarification about the invalid serial number.
Please let me know if you need further help with any of these steps!
Kind Regards,

Thanks for the info -- the issue is not with the pro book --- I just need a way to post the question -- it a new computer that I can register --- I can't be a typo since I did a copy / past from the computer info -- and that number does match with the serial number on the case itself -- do you know the best department to call about this?

Hello —
Thanks for the info — I first call the customer server number and they connected me to tech support — They would able to look up the info by the serial number, but since it is a workstation they had to connect me to the workstation group —
they confirmed that the serial number was correct and that this is a known issue at hp.com — they noted that in addition to the serial number the product number is need to to ID it, but the website does not have a field for that. The agent went on to say that “they” have no access to hp.com and there is no phone access to that group — he told me to go to hp.com/support and get help there.
So now for the past 20 minutes or so I been trying to get a email or chat option but it never was an option the website kept going in circles. I think my next computer might be a dell

Thank you for following up.
Your less-than-satisfactory experience with HP Support is unfortunately not the first occasion known to our circle of HP Community Experts.
I fully understand your frustration. It would drive me absolutely bonkers too if this were to happen to me.
Admittingly, I don't know a whole lot about Dell (or Lenovo), but what I do know is that these companies have their own less-than-stellar customer support issues. For some laughs, Google it.
So, where to go from here?
Btw, what I had not considered earlier, is that your HP ProBook 455 G4 Notebook PC was first released in 2017, meaning, this notebook is for all intents and purposes, well, "dated". Being a cynic, it occurred to me that this may also be the reason (though unwarranted!) why you are having registration issues.
Personally, I would consider upgrading. I happened to have done that myself, and now I got an HP ZBook Firefly 15.6 inch G8 Mobile Workstation PC. I am pretty happy about it. It does what I want it to do.
Anyway, here are some notebook upgrade options to consider:
1. HP ProBook 455 Series Upgrade
If you like the ProBook 455 series, upgrading to a more recent model (e.g., HP ProBook 455 G9 or G10) would provide:
- Newer AMD Ryzen processors.
- Improved battery life.
- Faster RAM (DDR4/DDR5 support).
- Larger SSD storage options.
- Enhanced security features like TPM 2.0 and IR cameras for facial recognition.
2. HP EliteBook Series
The EliteBook line offers a more premium experience compared to the ProBook:
- Higher-quality build materials (aluminum chassis).
- Better displays (Full HD, higher brightness, optional 4K).
- Thinner and lighter designs.
- Superior keyboards and touchpads.
- Advanced features like SureView privacy screens and better audio.
3. HP ZBook Mobile Workstations
For power users needing high performance:
- Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen PRO/Threadripper CPUs.
- Discrete GPUs (e.g., NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon Pro).
- Upgraded cooling systems.
- High-resolution displays (4K HDR).
- Targeted at professionals like engineers, designers, and developers.
4. HP Envy or Spectre Series
If you're looking for a mix of performance and premium aesthetics:
- Sleek designs with metal builds.
- Touchscreen options and convertible designs (Spectre x360).
- Long battery life and excellent displays (OLED options available).
- Powerful processors with great multimedia performance.
Key Features to Look For
- Processor: Upgrade to the latest AMD Ryzen 7000 series or Intel 13th/14th Gen CPUs.
- RAM: At least 16GB (upgradeable to 32GB or more for heavy multitasking).
- Storage: NVMe SSDs for lightning-fast read/write speeds.
- Display: Full HD or 4K resolution, with IPS or OLED panels.
- Battery Life: Models with larger battery options for longer unplugged use.
Anyway, if you ever want any recommendations for a specific budget or intended use (business, gaming, design), let me know.
Kind Regards and Happy Holidays,
