omen 40l

I tried to install the samsung 990 evo plus M2 into my Omen 40L but it is not being recognized... chat support was not helpful and youtube and other websites have failed me. I tried doing the drivers install but it says no samsung M2 found. I installed the samsung Hardware tool and it doesn't recognize it either, Same for disk management and storage. I tried to reseat it and installed it on my other pc and it found it instantly.

Any thoughts?

@MotherOfGamers,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Yes, I do have some thoughts -and thank you for reaching out.  I know it can be really frustrating when a new drive isn't detected. Since your Samsung 990 EVO Plus works fine in another system, we can reasonably rule out a faulty SSD. That narrows it down to either a compatibility issue, BIOS/firmware setting, or hardware detection glitch in the OMEN 40L.

Here’s a list of things to check and try:

1. Confirm Correct M.2 Slot and Interface:

  • The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is a high-performing NVMe PCIe Gen4 x4 -I would recommend installing your 990 Evo PLUS in the M.2 slot closest to the CPU.

2. Check BIOS Settings:

  • Reboot and enter BIOS (usually via Esc, F2, or F10 during startup).

  • Navigate to Storage Options:

    • Ensure M.2/PCIe Storage Remapping is enabled (if available).

    • If there's an option between RAID and AHCI, choose AHCI for compatibility.

  • Look under the System Info or Boot Order — see if the drive shows up there.

  • If not, the BIOS may not be initializing the slot correctly, or firmware needs updating.

3. Update BIOS / Firmware:

4. Power Cycle the PC:

  • After reseating the SSD, unplug your Omen 40L power cord, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to discharge static, then reconnect and boot. Sometimes this helps reset detection logic.

5. Samsung NVMe Driver (Optional):

Other Pitfalls to Avoid:

  • Thermal Shields: Some OMEN boards have heatsinks or shields over the M.2 slots. Ensure these aren’t preventing a good connection.

  • M.2 Screws: Double-check that the SSD is properly seated and fastened with the standoff screw.

If All Else Fails:

You might try:

  • Installing a different NVMe drive (even temporarily) to test the slot.

  • Using a PCIe to M.2 adapter in one of the open PCIe slots if supported (had to use this once myself).

  • Contacting HP Support again and escalating -unbeknownst to me, there may be a known issue with certain M.2 slots or firmware versions in your particular OMEN 40L model.

Let me know how far you get with these steps -happy to dig deeper if needed!

Kind Regards,

Please tell me how to get to the actual bios... all i can get into is the HP Walls... diagnostic and the one that shows me the system info and how to overclock the ram... I would love to get into actual bios...

And yes it is installed under the cpu

@MotherOfGamers,

Thanks for the clarification -it sounds to me like your system may be booting straight into the Omen-branded overclocking or diagnostics layer without giving access to the full UEFI BIOS.

Let’s try to force entry into the actual BIOS/UEFI Setup Utility:

Method 1: Esc + F10 (Standard Way):

  1. Fully shut down your OMEN 40L.

  2. Press the power button and immediately begin tapping the Esc key repeatedly (about once per second).

  3. You should land at the Startup Menu.

  4. From there, press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.

This should launch the full BIOS. If instead you're still landing in the Omen Performance Control screen, read on...

Method 2: Windows Method to Enter UEFI Firmware:

If the Esc key approach isn’t working, try this from within Windows:

  1. Click Start > Settings > System > Recovery.

  2. Under "Advanced startup," click Restart now.

  3. On the blue screen that appears, choose:

    • Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart

This method bypasses HP's startup menu entirely and directly launches the BIOS/UEFI setup.

If All Else Fails:

  • Try clearing CMOS (resetting BIOS to factory defaults) -if a setting is glitching and locking access, this might reset it.

  • You can do this by unplugging your PC, holding the power button for 15 seconds, then pressing the CMOS clear button on the motherboard (if available), or removing the CMOS battery for a minute.

Let me know what you see or if you're still stuck. We’ll get you into that BIOS one way or another.

Kind Regards,

@MotherOfGamers,

It is difficult for me to ascertain exactly what is going on remotely, so to speak.

We have already covered quite a bit of ground, and if resetting CMOS is not fixing your problem, then I don't know what other avenues are available to you -except taking your PC to a local PC repair/service business, and see if they can figure it out, I'm afraid.
