Microsoft Windows 11

I just recently noticed after two BIOS updates through HP assistant that my c drive shrank to 243,214 GB and a 😧 Data drive was added with 953,868 GB size (used 4.12 GB) When I look at properties,  the C drive shows red as if running out of memory on that Drive when it used to be 1.5 TB. MY PC has a 1.5TB drive, what caused the split and size change issues?,  .. windows 11 ?  or the BIOS update?   and does changing the size of each drive in "system" fix the issue? if so, what numbers should I type in there. I would like my C drive to be the larger of the two since all documents/apps etc default to install in the C drive.

Hi @JJWHITE1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The partitioning issue you're describing likely occurred due to changes in the BIOS or a misconfiguration during an update that impacted how the drive is partitioned. It could also be a side effect of Windows or HP's recovery/partition management tools.

Here's how to address this issue:

Confirm the Drive Layout

  1. Open Disk Management:
    • Right-click the Start Menu and select Disk Management.
  2. Check Partitions:
    • Review how your 1.5 TB drive is partitioned. Look for:
      • A large partition labeled C:.
      • Another large partition labeled 😧 (Data).
      • Any small partitions (e.g., recovery or EFI system partitions).

Understanding the Cause

  • BIOS Update: Some BIOS updates may trigger system recovery processes or updates that alter partitions for recovery purposes.
  • Windows 11: May reserve additional space for updates or create new partitions if it detects insufficient free space.

Decide Partition Sizes

If you want to make the C: drive larger, you can resize partitions, but this process depends on the following:

  1. C Drive Usage: Make sure the C drive is not nearly full before proceeding.
  2. Current Partition Sizes: Ensure there is unallocated space or space available on the D drive to reallocate.

Resize Partitions

  1. Backup Data: Before resizing, back up important data from both C: and 😧 drives to an external device.
  2. Shrink 😧 Drive:
    • In Disk Management, right-click 😧 and choose Shrink Volume.
    • Specify the amount of space to shrink (e.g., 500 GB) and confirm.
  3. Extend C: Drive:
    • Right-click C: and choose Extend Volume.
    • Use the unallocated space created from shrinking 😧 and confirm.

Automatic Document/App Storage

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
  2. Change default save locations for documents, music, etc., to 😧 if you want to better balance the space.

What Numbers to Type:

If you want to maximize the C drive, you could:

  • Shrink the D drive to ~250 GB, leaving ~1.25 TB for the C drive.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
