are we only able to install the FACTORY RESTORE DISKS on the HP PARTS LISTed hard drives only, for some reason my restore disks failed when i put on on a newer hard drive bought on the hp website (i thought since it was newer it would last longer) that wasn't listed on the parts list. now my hp computer is a "refurbished "windows 10 pro hp that works fine, but I'm curious to know what happened.

No, you can install newer HDD on your machine. In many cases HDD's on the list won't be available after few years. Why newer disk failed is a different story, what is the error message ? Could be software error, not hardware (disk) or simply due electrical error during installation.
Regards.
