hi

by deduction you probably have an erica motherboard

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-gaming-desktop-pc-tg01-0000a/37874510

  • Dual channel (1 DIMM per channel) memory architecture
  • Two DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets
  • Supports PC4-25600 (DDR4-3200)
  • Supports 4 GB, 8 GB, and 16 GB DDR4 UDIMMs
  • Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit systems
    note:
    32-bit systems cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
  • Supports up to 32 GB (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers

If you add a module, it must be identical, as close as the one in place
you may have an incompatibility, between the old and the new, in this case if the new one works alone, you will have to buy the same one
Try the scan

@stancelol,

You may also want to consider upgrading your processor to an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X.  Performance increase would be noticeable I would think: AMD Ryzen 5 3500 vs AMD Ryzen 7 3700X [cpubenchmark.net] by PassMark Software.

You can get an AMD Ryzen 3700X starting at around $160: ryzen 7 3700x: Search Result | eBay.

@Prométhée, after carefully researching the best possible RAM running at the best possible speed (3200 MHz), the following RAM appeared to be the only RAM which would do that: Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory 2x8GB CL16 BL8G32C16U4B ("B" for black, "W" for white or "R" for red RAM sticks) or the Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 C16 2x8GB.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

HI

sorry @NonSequitur777  but given this information, and not having the exact model, I only answer what is asked, addition of memory!
Although it can be tricky, the risk is minimal..
But replacing the processor is much more complicated, and risky..
And arrived there just after purchase, a bit of a shame
And depending on the rest of the configuration using the computer, this may not be the priority..
The warranty may be voided in the event of damage caused by the user.
Price, risk ratio I advise against such a change as long as it is not necessary, preferably out of warranty
@stancelol
what is your exact model?
