The red ports are numbered 2,3,4,5

The yellow are numbered 0 and 1

Put the DVD on #2

Put the hard drive on #0

I have Z400 so different, but I remember that DVD would not work on certain SATA, had to be AHCI for DVD to work.

The following is recommended settings for HD and DVD (ODD = optical disk drive)

Note that the 4 white ports are SCU, not AHCI

You have 10 SATA ports.  The ones marked SCU can only support RAID.

Your OS boot disk should be on SATA 0

Connect your optical drive to SATA 2

There are several version of RAID. I am only familiar with  JBOD, Raid-0 and Raid-1

Your bios will have (I am guessing) a configuration page for setting up raid.

If you attach a pair of 2 TB drives to SCU-0 and SCU-1 and select Raid-0 then windows will see (after formatting) a  4 TB drive.

If you want to set up a raid system with several disk drives I suggest you invest in a Synology NAS such as DS218  or DS918 or something newer and not load down your workstation with a lot of drives.

Hi all,

According to page 2 of the HP Z420 Quickspecs the HP Z420 has only 6 SATA ports.

Please note that SCU ports do not support optical drives;

Just to confuse things further, according to the HP Z420 Maintenance and Service Guide;

SATA Ports.JPG

Please use the existing SATA II/III ports on the motherboard;

Z420 SATA Ports.JPG

Yellow = 2x SATA III ports (6Gb/s)

Red = 4x SATA II ports (3Gb/s)

Blue = 4x SCU ports (3Gb/s)

Interesting.   I looked on eBay and found a -01 and a  -02 version of the motherboards but   both show 10 ports
