Observations...
Shipping boxes can be purchased at a variety of retailers, including the US Post Office and any shipping company (UPS / FedEx stores).
Shipping companies can also pack the computer for you - you can ship it or keep it. Just tell the clerk what you want and need. It's not free but it is very easy to do. These people pack and ship for a living - they know how to do this.
For shipping, (and storage) consider that this time of year (especially) it might be a very good plan to secure the computer in a sealed, waterproof wrapping (or bag). Water damage is possible any time of the year - it is more likely during the winter months.
Even if you are not concerned about water damage - bugs, dirt, dust, grit, and even smoke is generally bad for a computer. Wrap the system to protect against these dangers.
What else?
Storage boxes of all sizes, even heavy duty boxes, can be purchased at (for example) Amazon.
For storage, long term, make sure (along with protection against moisture), that the computer is protected from extremes in temperature. Desktops are relatively robust but fragile components dislike freezing or very hot conditions.
