omen
Microsoft Windows 11

Brand new omen 30L gtx 3090 intel i9-10900k makes a shrieking sound like a smoke detector when starting one specific game. My concern is the alarm indicates a heat/cooling issue .  1st thought its the game, but nervous if the unit is defective and  overheating risk? Still installing software, PC was just delivered.

I have never heard a PC alarm like this before.  thought it was a smoke detector

Also curious why the very first time starting Amazon New World, the fans all maxed out but only for a few moments and  went back to normal. Monitoring temps through Omen Gaming hub does not seem there is any problem since that first start of New World.   Also reaching out to HP support but posting here as well.

@tsarmb

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did you make any changes to the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • Does it happen only while playing games?

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

  • Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.

For more information on the fan: HP Notebook PCs - Fan Is Noisy and Spins Constantly

  • Perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset can reset recorded thermal values in memory and enable you to use the computer again, even if only for a short time, to access and save any important files before service.

For more information on performing a hard reset, see Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues.

  • In some cases, updating the BIOS might help prevent the noisy operation from occurring. For more information on how to update the BIOS, see Updating the BIOS.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi, thank you for replying, wanted to clarify that this is a brand new desktop machine just out of the box. I visually inspected and there is no sign of dust or debris yet.

Yes, this is has happened while gaming, I suspect it's the GPU alarm. so far two different games have caused the alarm - one is unplayable and the other seems to occur unpredictably although one factor is if my monitor goes to sleep the GPU alarm goes off (this is all assuming it is the GPU making the alarm and not the CPU/motherboard/?).  NVIDIA suggests it probably game settings and also suggested monitoring the temps which I am trying to do.

Still a work in progress but thank you again.
