HP ENVY Desktop - 795-0017na
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,
I am confused how I should populate the 4 DIMM slots on my motherboard.

I have

one matching set of two 8Gb DDR4 DIMM rated at 2133Mhz

and

one matching set of two 8Gb DDR4 DIMM rated at 3000Mhz

My motherboard has 4 DIMM slots, 2 black and 2 white,  labelled as DIMM 1 to DIMM 4  but to the sides of the DIMM slots are numbers 1 to 4 which do not go sequentially.    See the image below.

They go   DIMM1  = 1,  DIMM2 = 3,  DIMM3 = 2, DIMM4 = 4.

So, my question isL:  How do I populate the slots by matched pairs (by speed).

Do I go:   one matched pair into the black slots and the other matched pair into the white slots or do I follow the 1 to 4 numbers or ....

Any help is appreciated

@Cancelled_2023,

Correct, my slot numbers correspond with the actual numbers as shown in your picture ("1, 3, 2, 4").

Kind Regards,

@Cancelled_2023,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Preferably, you should have four matching RAM modules, if only because your HP ENVY Desktop - 795-0017na (7ZM31EA) fitted with the Berks motherboard with SSID: 844C, can run RAM up to 2666 MHz. Mixing 3200 MHz RAM with 2133 MHz RAM will slow down (down throttle) all your RAM to 2133 MHz.

That being said, I would install the 3200 MHz RAM sticks either in slots 3 & 4, and the 2133 MHz RAM sticks in slots 1 and 2, or (3200) slots 1 and 2 and (2133) in slots 3 & 4.

Kind Regards,

Dear  NonSequitur,

Thanks for your very prompt response.

Yes, I know that the faster ones will be throttled back but it is what I had at hand.

But just to make sure, when you refer to slots 1, 2, 3, 4 you mean the big bold numbers right at the end of the DIMM slots   (the number 1 being black on a white background and 3, 2 and 4 white numbers on dark background in a white square).

THANKS again

Robert
