would like to know if I can add 8 gigs of ram to this computer and make it 16 gigs total. Does it already have two 4 gig memory modules or does it have one slot with 8 gig ram and one open?
can I add a ssd drive to this computer? can I keep the current the hd drive in place?

@mark2345, welcome to the forum.
Here is the Memory upgrade information for the computer:
Single channel (2 DIMMs per channel) memory architecture
Two DDR3L UDIMM (240-pin) sockets
Supports up to PC3L-12800 (DDR3L-1600)
Supports 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB UDIMMs
Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit systems
note:
32-bit systems cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
Supports up to 32 GB (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers
note:
Maximum memory shown reflects the capability of the hardware and can be limited further in the operating system.
This information doesn't state how the memory is populated. You will have to open the case to see if it is 2 x 4 GB modules.
Here is the memory that is recommended by Crucial Memory:
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/pavilion-510-a010
Read the entire page to get all of the information that you need. Your best option is to contact Crucial's Tech Support to see if there will be a conflict if you add to the current 8 GB.
Also, they list SSD's that are compatible with the computer. There is a guide to help you install the SSD. I suggest a SSD of at least 250 GB.
