Welcome to our HP community forum!
Unfortunately, a Ryzen 5 5600 or the Ryzen 5 5600X for that matter, are not compatible with your desktop. Your Erica6 motherboard (SSID: 8906) is an HP custom-made motherboard, and no BIOS upgrade has been released (to the best of my knowledge) to make the aforementioned processors compatible.
You can verify that here, for example, where only the AMD "G" processors show up amongst HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2xxx (Erica6) Users.

No worries, there are no dumb questions: only questions which aren't asked.
The only processors compatible with an HP Erica6 motherboard are:
The best compatible CPU being the Ryzen 7 5700G, which you can buy online for around $140~$150, such as this purchase option, for example, via this trusted eBay Seller: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 4.6GHz CPU Processor | eBay.
Please note, ONLY the "G" version processors are compatible with your motherboard.

You don't necessarily need to update your BIOS before you install the Ryzen 5 5600G, but it would never be a bad idea to update it to the most recent version [F.32 Rev.A]: HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop PC TG01-2000a Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support:
For thermal paste, you can't go wrong with Arctic MX-4 or MX-6.
