My current HP Pavilion A6200n, has an Athlon 64x2 processor on the mother board (MCP61PM-HM). Can I upgrade the processor to a Pheonem 64-950 or 980 quad core processor, or should I just replace the motherboard and processor with something newer?

Greetings,
Welcome back to the forum.
I am not a HP employee.
Your PC (Link) was released for sale in 2007. The MB supports CPU upgrades to a Athlon 64 or a Sempron.
You would have to replace the:
MB
RAM
CPU
Optical drive
Chassis, and get a new Windows product key.
It is best to build a new PC or buy a new HP PC.
