upgrade to Ryzen 7 9700x

if i wanted to upgrade from the 8700f to a 9700x would I have to get a new motherboard and new psu? if so would that mean i need to get a new case as well?

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I would not do a new: MB/power supply to upgrade from a 8700F processor to a 9700X processor.

A 9700X will work with an AMD socket AM5 MB provided the BIOS has been updated to ID the processor.

You have an AMD socket AM5 MB since you are now using a 8700F processor.

But HP may limit MB processor support/upgrades by not including the processor signature in the firmware (BIOS). So there is a chance your HP PC will not POST after installing a 9700X. 

Please provide a HP PC Product Number so the Forum can check your MB's supported processors.

HP Support sites for certain HP PCs have been unreliable lately. I can't say if processor upgrade support for your MB is available at your PC's MB support site.

I don't think you would need a new power supply if your PC's BIOS  supports a 9700X. The 8700F and the 9700X (both having a 65 watt TDP)  should run using the same PSU.

And the HP provided processor cooling solution should also work with a 9700X at a 65 watt TDP.
