Hello every one i want to upgrade my ram on the z400 workstation and i accomplished it with matching sticks from hp. the existing ram were 2GB and i installed another8GB two fourGB sticks all hp and have them in the right order and it did make a difference in performance, but will any ddr3 ram work in this computer as long as they match. i have some ripjaw sticks that are eight GB a piece now how do i know what is buffered I think it matters right? and the frequency looks different i am confused as to what buffered and un buffered which is correct? i think its buffered but i am not positive and again will any ddr 3 work as long as it is matched? this is my question i have more but this is enough for now thanks.

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
There are two types of Z400 motherboards. Some with 4 RAM slots and some with 6 RAM slots, like yours.
Your Z400 uses older DDR3 PC3 RAM, up to 1333 MHz (1600 MHz RAM will down throttle to 1333 MHz). What G.SKILL Ripjaw RAM are you referring to? -This RAM may not be compatible. Also, RAM configuration is also important:
Here is an excellent link with relevant Z400 Workstation RAM info: https://cloudninjas.com/collections/z400#:~:text=The%20HP%20Z400%20Workstation%20allows,are%20number....
You may want to take a look at HP Z400 User benchmarks: UserBenchmark: HP Z400 Workstation Compatible Components.
Hope this was helpful.
