It is a keyboard HP 975 Dual Mode I bought from HP Store Switzerland

https://www.hp.com/ch-de/shop/product.aspx?id=3Z726AA&opt=UUZ&sel=ACC

As to my reading the serial number is "9CT429F03D".

Requesting support from HP for this KB one has to enter this serial number to get access to the support from HP. Also for registering the product.

https://support.hp.com/ch-de/add-device

Everywhere at HP the serial number is needed. But the serial number "9CT429F03D" is not accepted, always rejected.

So I wanted to verify the serial number.

Real problem is:

The backlight of this keyboard is very lazy. Sometimes it doesn't light on. Hoovering with both hands above the keyboard for long time doesn't switch on the the backlight. The backlight needs special care/attention by the user. This is annoying.

Why isn't there a switch/setting with the KB to have/get the backlight "always on".

Other question:

With the software "HP Accessory Center" it is possible to config the keyboard. Does the keyboard itself store these config values itself? Or is "HP Accessory Center" running in the background needed that special settings apply to the keyboard using it? I am on Linux. No "HP Accessory Center" for Linux available so config has been done on an old Mac.

Why  it needs such a long time to get lit?

Hi @aw_ph,

Thank you for the response.

It sounds like your laptop’s backlit keyboard is responding slower than expected, taking longer than usual to light up. This can happen due to software settings, power management, or driver issues. Let’s try these steps to improve the response:

Steps to troubleshoot slow backlit keyboard:

Check Keyboard Backlight Settings

On many HP laptops, press Fn + F5/F4 (or the key with a backlight icon) to adjust brightness.

Go to Windows Settings → Devices → Typing → Keyboard (if available) and check for backlight timeout/delay settings.

Update BIOS and Keyboard Drivers

Open HP Support Assistant → My devices → Updates.

Install any BIOS, chipset, or keyboard driver updates available for your model.

Check Power Settings

Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings → Keyboard backlight / HP Hotkey Support.

Ensure the keyboard backlight is set to Always On or normal delay, not reduced for battery saving.

Perform a Hard Reset

Shut down the laptop, disconnect charger, remove any peripherals.

Press and hold power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect power and start the laptop.

Test in BIOS

Restart and press Esc or F10 (depending on model) to enter BIOS.

Check if the keyboard backlight responds faster in BIOS. If yes, it indicates a Windows/software-related delay.

Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts

Perform a clean boot: Windows + R → msconfig → Services → Hide Microsoft services → Disable all → Startup tab → Open Task Manager → Disable all → Restart.

See if the keyboard backlight responds faster.

I hope this helps.
