Hi @RickHSV,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Great question! Here’s what you need to know to use those SATA ports on your HP Omni Core 5 desktop:

What Cables You Need

  1. SATA Data Cable
    • Connects the motherboard SATA port to the storage device (HDD or SSD).
    • One end plugs into the motherboard SATA connector, the other into the drive.
  2. SATA Power Cable
    • Comes from your power supply unit (PSU).
    • If your PSU has unused SATA power connectors, you can use those directly.
    • If not, you’ll need a Molex-to-SATA power adapter.

Will SATA HDDs Work or Only SATA SSDs?

  • Both SATA HDDs and SATA SSDs will work.
  • The motherboard SATA ports are universal for 2.5" SSDs and 3.5" HDDs.
  • Performance difference:
    • SSD = faster boot and load times.
    • HDD = larger storage at lower cost.

Steps to Install

  1. Power off and unplug the desktop.
  2. Mount the drive in an available bay.
  3. Connect the SATA data cable from the motherboard to the drive.
  4. Connect the SATA power cable from the PSU to the drive.
  5. Boot up and check the BIOS to confirm the drive is detected.
  6. Format the drive in Windows Disk Management.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
