@jaxpclover,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

I would be surprised if you couldn't upgrade your PC to an i7-8700K (which would be a significant upgrade from your i5-8400) but I need to know what model desktop you got in order to confirm it.

Please type in: System Information in your Windows search bar, click on the System Information app, and look to the right of "System SKU" and "BaseBoard Product".  Please share what it says to the right of these items.

Kind Regards,

I'm not too sure, but I have a rother mobo according to hp. It also doesn't list an i7 8700, but it does list a 9700. I'm not sure if A (smbv) helps, but that's all I have.

@jaxpclover,

I am currently in transit, so I can only use my smartphone to look up things. Having said that, it looks like that a Rother motherboard (SSID: 8653), is not compatible with higher TDP "K" processors. This means that the processor upgrades I would recommend are either an i7-9700 or the i7-9700F (which requires a GPU).
