Why your HP EliteDesk G2 won’t start with the Nvidia Tesla P4 (PG414):
The issue is due to how the HP EliteDesk G2 handles graphics devices. When you install the Tesla P4 -a data center GPU with no video outputs -your system:
Detects it as a discrete GPU,
Automatically disables the integrated graphics (iGPU),
Redirects video output to the Tesla card (which has no video ports),
Result: black screen, though the system might still be running headless.
Unfortunately, the EliteDesk G2 BIOS typically does not include an option to force the system to continue using integrated graphics when a discrete card is installed.
Workarounds You Can Try:
Test with a supported GPU first:
Boot using a regular graphics card (e.g., GT 1030, GTX 1050) that has video outputs.
Then install the Tesla P4 alongside it (if there's room and enough power).
This allows the system to boot with display output while also recognizing the Tesla card for compute tasks.
Use the Tesla P4 only as a secondary compute accelerator:
This means always having a “real” GPU or using a system that allows integrated graphics alongside discrete GPUs.
This is often possible with workstations (like HP Z420/Z440) or server motherboards, but not most small business desktops like the EliteDesk G2.
Consider a Different Platform:
The Tesla P4 is better suited for server or workstation-class platforms where headless operation is expected and where BIOS/firmware allows flexible GPU routing.
Bottom Line:
Your HP EliteDesk G2 likely disables the internal GPU as soon as it detects the Tesla card, leaving you with no video output.
Since the Tesla P4 has no ports, this results in a black screen. Without BIOS-level control to override this behavior, this PC is not compatible for primary use with the Tesla P4 alone.
Let me know your exact EliteDesk G2 model (e.g., 800 G2 SFF or Tower) if you want help confirming PSU headroom or case clearance for running a second GPU alongside the Tesla.
Kind Regards,
