I know very little about Virtual Machines, except in the IBM "mainframe" environment.
But, I can imagine that the "host" system might take a "real" CD/DVD drive, and make it available to the "guest".
So, if the "host" maps a drive-letter (over the network) to your shared folder, can that drive-letter be made available to the "guest" as a "virtual-disk-drive" ?
P.S. A Google-search for "vmware map virtual disk to drive" seems to give some relevant results.

Thanks for the reference to VM instructions. That makes it easier to find for sure. I did have a VM running XP on my Win 10 machine before the update to win 10 from win 8.1. I have not looked into running a VM on win 10 so I will probably go to microsoft to read sone instructions on that OS. What I want to do is have the VM runniong XP and then get full access to the old network server so I can Read/Write on the network system and even surf the web if needs be. I hope to get instructions from either Microsoft or the "vmware map virtual disk to drive" search to get that working. If I can get it working that might be a solution. Then I believe I will back the whole thing up to a ISO in one of my External hard drives so I can get it back if it fails due to sitting for a couple of months between activations.
In a second post you asked me which AutoCad version I have. I am running Autodesk Civil 3D 2007 and Land Desktop 2007 which I checked our with my vender for compatibility on Win 7 machines. They told me it is quetionable whether it would work and then when Win 8.0 came out they said absolutely not. I never tried to load it on a Win 7 machine because I never got the Pro version of the OS. If I understand correctly the Win 7 Pro is the only one that will run software in XP compatible mode. Anyway I figure I can get it all figured out. Thanks.
